元国際交流員（CIR）をインタビューしました！ We interviewed past CIRs!
福井県勝山市は、平成5年に､1代目の国際交流員(CIR)を受け入れました。
その時から、全員で14人の国際交流員が海外から勝山市にやってきました。
現在も、市内の学校・園訪問、言語教室、イベントなどを通じて、多文化共生と異文化の理解を推進しています。
勝山市70周年を記念するため、現在国際交流員アパエズ・ジャックリンさんが元CIRに連絡をして、勝山市についてお話を聞かせていただきました。

Katsuyama City welcomed its first Coordinator of International Relations (CIR) in 1992. Since then, a total of 14 CIRs have come to Katsuyama from abroad. Even now, they are advancing multiculturalism and cultural understanding through efforts such as school and daycare visits, language classes, and events.
In order to commemorate the 70th anniversary of Katsuyama City's formation, current CIR Jacquelyn Apaez contacted past CIRs and asked about their time in Katsuyama.

1995年〜1997年 シェルトン・キャロライン (Caroline Shelton)

1) 勝山市の国際交流員になって、良かったと思うことは何ですか？ What did you like about being a CIR in Katsuyama?
いっぱいあります！アメリカのゲームと歌を教えるためでも、日本の伝統的なゲームを学ぶためでも、小学校を訪問して子どもに会うことに飽きたことは一切ありませんでした。
コロラド州の児童と勝山市の児童とのホームステイ交換をとても楽しみ、お互いの故郷での生活を経験する姿を見るのが楽しかったです。コロラド州では、山の別荘に泊まるのが楽しかったです。勝山市では、子どもたち（私を含めて）が日の出に白山を登りました！
そして、勝山アスペン・ミュージック・フェスティバルに参加するためにアメリカからやってきた音楽家を受け入れるのが好きでした。弦楽四重奏が元町にある醬油のお店での初めての演奏をしました！
一般的に言うと、コミュニティーに参加すること、市内のお祭りに行くこと、友達との飲み会やカラオケパーティーとか、全部が素敵でした。
So many things! I never tired of visiting elementary schools and meeting the kids, whether it was to teach them American games or songs, or to learn Japanese games.
I really enjoyed the homestay exchange we did between youth in Colorado and Katsuyama; it was fun to see them experience each others’ hometowns. In CO, it was fun to stay overnight in a mountain hut. In Katsuyama, the kids (me included) got to hike to the top of Hakusan at sunrise! I also enjoyed hosting musicians from the US who would come to the “Aspen Music Festival in Katsuyama”- one group, a string quartet, put on the first ever performance in a shoyu shop downtown.
Generally speaking, it was wonderful to be a part of the community, attend local festivals, participate in rallies to save the train, and go to many nomikai and karaoke nights with friends.
2) 一番の思い出はありますか？ Do you have a favorite memory from your time in Katsuyama?
大切な思い出の一つは北谷小学校の二人の生徒を訪問した時です。最後の在学生だったと思います。一緒にそばを打ちました。でも、たくさんの思い出の一つだけですね！
One special memory was visiting 2 students at Kitadani elementary school. I think they were the last students to attend that school. We made soba together.

3) 自分にとって、勝山市とは？ What does Katsuyama mean to you?
コミュニティーに貢献して、コミュニティーを良くして、コミュニティーのユニークなところをうたうことを学びました。そして、山、平泉寺、寒いけど居心地いい冬、と白山の歴史の美しさに深く感動しました。
I learned what it means to contribute to your community, make it better and celebrate its unique qualities. I was also deeply impacted by the beauty of the mountains, Heisenji, the cold but cozy winters, and the cultural history of Hakusan.
4) CIRとしてJETプログラムを卒業したら、何をしましたか？ What did you do immediately after your time as a CIR?
帰国した後、最初はシアトル市の日本領事館で働きました。勝山市役所で働くほど面白くなかったです！その後、すぐに大学院の社会福祉修士課程に進学しました。
My first job after coming home was working at the Japanese Consulate in Seattle. Not nearly as interesting and fun as working for Katsuyama City Hall! I soon after pursued a Master of Social Work degree.
5) 今はどのように時間を過ごしていますか？ How do you spend your time now?
シアトル市に住んでいます。三回日本に友達に会いにいきました。ワシントン大学に勤めていて、娘が日本語イマージョン小学校に通っています。旦那と娘がいて、娘を恐竜博物館に連れていくのを楽しみにしています！
I live in Seattle and have gone back to visit friends in Japan 3 times since my stay. I work at the University of Washington, and my daughter attends a Japanese immersion elementary school. I have a husband and daughter and can’t wait to take her to the Dino museum!
6) 70周年について、勝山市と勝山市民への一言をお願いします。 Can you provide a brief comment for Katsuyama and its residents in regards to the 70th anniversary?
勝山市が樹立されて70年間だけだということを知って驚きました！豊富な歴史と文化を保存しながら未来を企画する市を築くのは努力が大変かかると思いますが、華やかなコミュニティーを作ってきました。おめでとうございます！
I am surprised to know that Katsuyama-shi is only 70 years old--it takes hard work to create a city that can preserve its rich history and culture and plan for the future. Congratulations on the progress you have made in creating a vibrant community!

1) 勝山市の国際交流員になって、良かったと思うことは何ですか？ What did you like about being a CIR in Katsuyama?
一番好きだったのは勝山市と勝山市の人々について学ぶことでした。そして、当時勝山市の提携都市になっていたコロラド州のアスペン市とのホームステイと交流会などを企画することが特に楽しかったです。毎年、アスペンの高校生のホームステイとアスペンから来た音楽家の受け入れを計画しました。
What I liked most about being a CIR in Katsuyama was learning about the city and its people. I particularly enjoyed coordinating homestays and other events with Aspen, which was a “friendship city” of Katsuyama at the time. We organized an annual homestay for high school students, and visits from musicians at the Aspen Music Festival.
2) 一番の思い出はありますか？ Do you have a favorite memory from your time in Katsuyama?
左義長！もう一つは勝山市役所の野球チームに参加したことです。
Sagicho! Another favorite memory of mine is playing for the Katsuyama City Hall baseball team.
3) 自分にとって、勝山市とは？ What does Katsuyama mean to you?
勝山市は日本での生活についてたくさん教えてくれました。味噌汁とご飯の作り方を学び、納豆も好きになりました。今まだ空で覚えているぐらい、ラジオ体操の動きをよく覚えました。先輩になることと後輩になることの意味を知りました。平泉寺の歴史を学びました。温泉の正しい入り方を学びました。日本人の優しさを知りました。これらすべての経験で、結局日本に落ち着くことを決めました。
Katsuyama taught me so much about life in Japan. I learned how to make miso soup and rice, and even to like natto. I learned radio aerobics (rajio taiso), so well that I still know the moves by heart. I learned what it means to be a “sempai” and a “kohai”. I learned the history of Heisenji. I learned how to use an onsen properly. I learned the kindness of Japanese people. All of these experiences ultimately led me to decide to settle in Japan and build a life here.
4) CIRとしてJETプログラムを卒業したら、何をしましたか？ What did you do immediately after your time as a CIR on the JET Program?
JETプログラムのCIRとして卒業したら、1年間丸岡で同じJETプログラムのALTの仕事をしました。JETを終えたら、中国の蘇州市に引っ越して1年間中国語を勉強しました。
Immediately after my time as a CIR in Katsuyama、 I spent 1 year as an ALT in Maruoka (now Sakai). After that, I moved to Suzhou, China and spent a year studying the Chinese language.
5) 今はどのように時間を過ごしていますか？ How do you spend your time now?
その後、帰国して弁護士になりました。コロラド州のデンバー市で8年間ぐらい弁護士として開業していた後で、家族と一緒に日本に戻ることにしました。今は、日本の最も大きい法律事務所「西村あさひ法律事務所」の共同経営者です。東京に住んでいます。結婚していて、14歳と11歳の子どもがいます。
I eventually moved back to the United States and became a lawyer. After practicing law for 8 years in Denver, Colorado, my family and I decided to move back to Japan. I am currently a partner at Nishimura & Asahi, the largest law firm in Japan. I live in Tokyo. I am married with two children, ages 14 and 11.
6) 70周年について、勝山市と勝山市民への一言をお願いします。Can you provide a brief comment for Katsuyama and its residents in regards to the 70th anniversary?
おめでとうございます！勝山市は素敵なところです。勝山市にいた時間を懐かしく思い出します。そして、まだJETプログラムに参加して毎年CIRを受け入れてくれるのを聞いて嬉しいです。寛大と異文化へのオープンな考え方は勝山市の最高のところです。
Congratulations! Katsuyama is a fabulous place. I think back on my time there fondly. I am also happy to hear that Katsuyama continues to support the JET program and welcome CIRs each year. Your continued generosity and openness toward foreign cultures is one of the many things that makes Katsuyama great.

1) 勝山市の国際交流員になって、良かったと思うことは何ですか？ What did you like about being a CIR in Katsuyama?
勝山の国際交流員に派遣され、コミュニティの一員として勝山の魅力を経験できることが大好きでした。特に良かった職務は三年目で私の最後の年に「ハワイ青少年交流事業」を始めたことです。小学校訪問で教えていた中高生をハワイに連れて行き、さまざまな体験をさせ、現地の生徒たちにも会わせたことです。この交流で彼らがもっとアメリカと世界に対する視野を広げる機会になったことを願っています。
I loved being a part of the community and exploring all that Katsuyama had to offer. A job duty I particularly enjoyed was starting the Hawaii Youth Cultural Exchange Trip during my 3rd and final year as CIR. I was so proud to be able to take students who I taught during their elementary school years on a trip to experience Hawaii and meet local students. I hope this exchange helped widen their perspective of America and the world.
2) 一番の思い出はありますか？ Do you have a favorite memory from your time in Katsuyama?
素晴らしい思い出が多すぎて一つを選ぶのが難しいのですが、雪と冬を楽しむ思い出がたくさんあります。左義長まつりの練習と演奏や、ジャム勝でのスノーボードや、生徒たちと雪遊び、すべてハワイでは出来なくて、たっぷり楽しめました。
I have too many amazing memories to choose from, but many of them deal with the snow. From practicing and performing in the Sagicho Festival, snowboarding at Ski Jam, and playing with students in the snow, I thoroughly enjoyed the winter season that I had not been able to in Hawaii.
3) 自分にとって、勝山市とは？ What does Katsuyama mean to you?
勝山は私の第二の故郷になりました。たった三年間しか住んでいませんでしたが、勝山の皆さんは私をまるで家族のように歓迎してくれました。そのおかげで、生まれた場所でなくてもその地を愛することができるのが分かりました。
Katsuyama was really my second home. Even though I only lived there for three years, the people I met and built relationships with treated me as though I was part of their family, and it showed me you did not have to be born somewhere to love a place.
4) CIRとしてJETプログラムを卒業したら、何をしましたか？ What did you do immediately after your time as a CIR on the JET Program?
私の母校に日本語教師として雇われ、中学一と二年生に日本語を教え始めました。そして、ハワイではスノーボードが出来なくなり、サーフィンをし始めました。
I was hired by my alma mater as a Japanese Language teacher for 7th and 8th graders. I also started surfing to fill the void I had since I was no longer able to go snowboarding.
5) 今はどのように時間を過ごしていますか？ How do you spend your time now?
日本語教師として、私の生徒たちに日本語でのコミューニケーションを通じて、文化の興味や世界への関心を広げてもらいたいと思っています。勝山での経験は私に大変有意義な人間関係を築く機会を与えてくれました。そして、私の生徒たちにも同じような体験をしてもらいたいと願っています。
As a Japanese teacher, I try to help my students learn about how to communicate in the language as a way of developing cultural awareness and a curiosity of the world. My experiences in Katsuyama gave me the opportunity to make deep and meaningful relationships, and I want my students to have a chance to do the same.
6) 70周年について、勝山市と勝山市民への一言をお願いします。Can you provide a brief comment for Katsuyama and its residents in regards to the 70th anniversary?
勝山市の皆さんへ、温かいおもてなしと、素晴らしい街への歓迎に、心より御礼申し上げます。勝山市は本当に特別な場所です。「縁」という不思議な力で、私と勝山の皆さんとが結ばれたことを、心から嬉しく思います。
To the people of Katsuyama who treated me so kindly and welcomed me into your wonderful city, I would like to say congratulations and thank you from the bottom of my heart! This place is special, and I am so happy “en” has tied me to you all.

1) 勝山市の国際交流員になって、良かったと思うことは何ですか？ What did you like about being a CIR in Katsuyama?
たくさんの勝山市民に出会うきっかけになった色々な業務が好きでした。楽しい瞬間がいっぱいありましたが、最初に頭に浮かぶのはハワイの交換プログラム、毎週の英会話教室、学校訪問、と異文化交流イベントです。
I liked the variety of work that allowed me to meet many members of the community. So many enjoyable moments. The top ones that come to mind were the Hawaii exchange program, weekly English classes, school visits, and foreign culture events.
2) 一番の思い出はありますか？ Do you have a favorite memory from your time in Katsuyama?
行くのが好きだった所は平泉寺白山神社です。お正月に行った思い出があります。
One of my favorite places to go was Hakusan Heisenji. Happy to have the memory of going there during the new year countdown.
3) 自分にとって、勝山市とは？ What does Katsuyama mean to you?
勝山市に住んでいた時間にすごい影響を与えられました。日本語と文化知識を強化しただけでなく、一生の友達も作りました。ずっと勝山市との繋がりを持つと思います。将来はよく訪れることを期待しています。
I’ve been impacted greatly by my time in Katsuyama. Not only did I strengthen my Japanese and knowledge on the culture, but I also made lifelong friends. I’ll always have a connection with the city. I hope to visit often in the future.
4) CIRとしてJETプログラムを卒業したら、何をしましたか？ What did you do immediately after your time as a CIR on the JET Program?
帰国して家族と一緒に休養した後で、大学院で翻訳とローカリゼーション経営を勉強しました。
After taking a break back home with family I went to grad school for translation and localization management.
5) 今はどのように時間を過ごしていますか？ How do you spend your time now?
今、翻訳マーケティング代理店でAIのプロジェクトに取り組んでいます。
Now, I’m working at a translation marketing agency working on AI projects.
6) 70周年について、勝山市と勝山市民への一言をお願いします。Can you provide a brief comment for Katsuyama and its residents in regards to the 70th anniversary?
3年間勝山市の人々と交流させてもらった者として、勝山市の豊かな歴史と温かいコミュニティーを直接経験しました。70周年おめでとうございます！
As someone who had the pleasure of spending three years working closely with the people of Katsuyama, I've witnessed firsthand the city’s rich culture and warm community. Congratulations on celebrating your 70th anniversary!
